Robert Novak: Age, War Support Hurting McCain

New York State Republicans aren't exactly clamoring for a return ticket on Sen. John McCain's Straight Talk Express - the campaign bus he nearly rode to the presidential nomination five years ago.

Columnist Robert Novak reports that the Arizona maverick is scheduled to appear Monday night for a "Straight Talk America" fundraiser at Manhattan's tony St. Regis Hotel.

The response, so far - however - has been underwhelming.

The price was $1,000 per person for a 6 p.m. reception and $5,000 per person for a 7:30 p.m. dinner - a pricey night even in Manhattan.

But Novak says the cost alone doesn't explain the "tepid" response.

Instead, high dollar donors are concerned that at 72, McCain may be too old to mount a credible presidential run.

And in blue-state New York, liberal GOP'ers who might otherwise flock to McCain are put off by his support for the war.
