LOS ANGELES -- Hollywood director Rob Reiner is warning the California Hospital Association to withdraw or rewrite a ballot proposal it's pushing for 2006.
Reiner says the hospital proposal would slash funding for needy preschoolers. The proposal calls for a $1.50 tax on each pack of cigarettes to fund emergency rooms and other health programs.
Reiner championed a 1998 ballot proposal slapping a 50-cents-a-pack tax on cigarettes to fund health and education programs for children up to five years old, known as First Five California.
Reiner says, if passed, the hospital proposal would likely lead to fewer cigarettes sold. In turn, tax collections would decline and First Five would receive less money.
A hospital association spokeswoman says the group is eager to discuss the issue with Reiner.
