Riding high in the presidential polls, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani took time off from a golf tournament this week to praise Jeanine Pirro - now seeking the GOP nomination for the Senate seat held by Hillary Clinton - but stopped short of backing the Westchester County district attorney.
Calling her "a superior candidate," Giuliani added: "Jeanine Pirro is a very good friend. I think she's been an absolutely terrific district attorney."
But when asked by Westchester's Journal News about endorsing Pirro over GOP opponents Ed Cox, the late Richard Nixon's son-in-law, and former Yonkers mayor John Spencer, Giuliani said: "It's a little early, but let's hope — let's hope she'll be a candidate and I'll support her. Ed Cox is a good man, too, and he's a good friend of mine, so we're going to have to see how that all works out. But Jeanine, I think, is a superior candidate."
In a statement, Pirro said: "I am gratified by Rudy's support, particularly given our shared law enforcement background. I look forward to his being a part of my campaign for Senate."
Cox's campaign saw Giuliani's comment in a very different light, according to the Journal News.

Said Cox spokesman Thomas Basile, "It is clear that Giuliani is not about to jump in and rescue the floundering Pirro campaign. He is not going to take a big political risk getting out front on Pirro when her campaign's credibility and viability are being widely questioned."
