James Hirsen Blasts Non-U.S. Citizen Donald Sutherland
Actor Donald Sutherland’s weepy attack on President Bush on BBC while in Britain where, among other things, he called the president "an inadequate liar,” and bashed the U.S., drew a sharp response from NewsMax columnist James Hirsen, author of the hot new book "Hollywood Nation.”
Asked by host Joe Scarborough on MSNBC’s Scarborough Country if he thinks that ABC executives are sweating tonight because of Sutherland's weepy, anti-American screed on BBC, Hirsen said "Sure ... Sutherland is the brand and what he did was far from subtle. "People are sick and tired of celebrities who go overseas and stand on foreign soil and act with this sort of unseemly, uniformed, exaggerated rhetoric that I write about in my book that hurts our image and undermines our morale.
Story Continues Below "Look, here’s a guy who’s a male and he breaks out down crying and blubbering and sobbing - doesn’t he know that the metrosexual thing is over?
"I do understand one thing – he can’t cry in this TV series from ABC - Commander in Chief, this Hillary Clinton campaign commercial - because he plays the typical Hollywood heartless Republican,” Hirsen told Scarborough.
Scarborough commented that it used to be Hollywood stars could get away with saying just about anything, but now a lot of Americans are starting to fight back. "We have something like this show, where it’s $180,000 for 30-second ads,” Hirsen said, noting that antics such as Sutherland’s could cost ABC big money. "Look at what happened to Whoopi Goldberg during the 2004 campaign," Hirsen continued. "She did something that interfered with her image, and the Slim Fast people dropped her as a spokesperson.
"Hollywood stars are products, and when they go overseas they are de facto ambassadors.”
Scarborough commented that he thought most Americans would be shocked if they knew what these Hollywood celebrities are saying in Berlin, in Paris in London about their country.
Said Hirsen "It is this republic’s form of government that allows them the freedom to get wealthy.” Yet people like Donald Sutherland and more recently Antonio Banderas – people who are not even American citizens – Sutherland is a Canadian citizen – are seen as overseas as Hollywood stars and Americans when they attack the U.S.
