Hillary Clinton Cool to Miers Pick

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton reacted coolly yesterday to news that President Bush had tapped White House counsel Harriet Miers to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.

"I will examine the record and qualifications of the nominee and closely follow the Judiciary Committee hearings," Clinton said in a terse two-sentence statement.

The top Democrat's comments contrasted markedly with those from Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, who gushed yesterday:

"I like Harriet Miers. As White House Counsel, she has worked with me in a courteous and professional manner. I am also impressed with the fact that she was a trailblazer for women as managing partner of a major Dallas law firm and as the first woman president of the Texas Bar Association."

Mrs. Clinton's New York colleague, Sen. Charles Schumer, also seemed more favorably disposed to Miers, telling reporters: "It could have been a lot worse."
