Syndicated columnist and commentator Tony Snow "loves” the Samuel Alito pick as the next U.S. Supreme Court nominee. He loves it for several reasons, including judicial philosophy, but also because it lights a fire under many politicians.
Snow said during his self-titled radio program Monday that he loves the Alito pick as much as he hated the Harriet Miers nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.
"Bush screwed up with the Miers nomination,” Snow said. "A Supreme Court nomination is not for the faint of heart – it’s not an honor for nice people who bake a nice pie. By selecting Alito, the president shows that he has learned that this is not a time to run from a fight. It’s time to challenge everyone and their principles.
"Prepare for an ugly fight in the Senate Judiciary Committee,” Snow predicted. "Let’s welcome that fight.”

Snow said Alito will challenge Democrats to position him as unqualified or otherwise unworthy to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, which he says they will not be able to do.
"The liberal talking points were out before the nomination was even made public,” Snow said. "They will use ‘conservatism’ and ‘diversity’ as buzzwords to try to portray Alito as ‘just another white guy conservative’ who Bush and the Republicans want on the court.”
Snow went so far as to predict that Democrats – in desperation – will use cultural slurs in a fight against Alito.
"Reid – or someone like him – will call Alito a ‘fascist’ because that links he and Antonin Scalia’s heritage to [Former Fascist Italian leader Benito] Mussolini,” Snow said. "When the Italian-Americans complain, Reid will say, ‘No, that’s not at all what I meant …”
Snow said the Democrats, including Reid and Sen. Patrick Leahy, had no intention of ever working with the president on a so-called "consensus nominee,” which is just code for a pick that Democrats will like and Republicans won’t.
"Let the Democrats kick and scream about Alito,” Snow said. "The president is no longer back on his heels – he’s ready to fight with this pick. It’s about time.”
