Ex-Klansman 'Dismayed' by Personal Criticism
During Tuesday's Senate hearings on the confirmation of Secretary of State nominee Dr. Condoleezza Rice, former Ku Klux Klansman Robert Byrd said he was "dismayed" that his motives in opposing her have been questioned.
"I am particularly dismayed by criticism I have read that Senate Democrats, by insisting on having the opportunity to debate this nomination, have somehow been engaged in nothing more substantial than petty politics or partisan delaying tactics," Sen. Byrd said, his voice reportedly rising in anger.

The one-time night rider didn't specifically address concerns that his opposition to Rice was based on racism, a foible he insists he never shared even while he was a recruiter for the anti-black terrorist group.
Instead, the West Virginia Democrat has long insisted that he joined the Klan to "fight communism."
Asked in 2003 whether Sen. Byrd still maintains that he never shared the Klan's racist views, his spokesman Tom Gavin told NewsMax.com, "That's correct."
