"We reached an agreement on language which, if accurately translated into Chinese, would make it clear that I have both differences in policy (from the Chinese) and a long-term commitment to reconciliation," Clinton said.

Bob Barnett, a lawyer who handled the Chinese book deal for Clinton, said it was important to publish an official version of the best seller in China, because a vast piracy market had produced versions that inserted inaccuracies and changed facts.

One version was lifted verbatim from "Living History," the memoirs of Clinton's wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Others had a young Clinton praising China's Communist revolutionary Mao Zedong or Clinton talking about the feng-shui in his home state of Arkansas, neither of which are in the original.

Clinton spoke Tuesday at his presidential library at a news conference with former President Bush. The two were appointed by the current President Bush to increase private donations for victims of the southeast Asian earthquake and tsunami.
