Andy Rooney: Real Culprits Escaped
While most of the high profile figures at CBS praised the investigation into Dan Rather's Bush-bashing forged document report as the first step towards the network's rehabilitation, resident curmudgeon Andy Rooney complained that his bosses had scapegoated lower level players while the big fish got away.
"The people on the front lines got fired while the people most instrumental in getting the broadcast on escaped,” Rooney told USA Today on Tuesday.

Rooney was referring to fired ex-colleagues Josh Howard, Mary Murphy and Betsy West, who were ordered to fall on their swords and resign. Meanwhile, CBS News President Andrew Heyward and Dan Rather himself will be allowed to remain on the job.
Fired "60 Minutes II" producer Mary Mapes, who did the legwork on the bogus report that exploded into scandal, made it clear late Monday that she wasn't about to go away quietly.
"If there was a journalistic crime committed here, it was not by me," a bitter-sounding Mapes said in a statement last night. "I am concerned that [the actions of CBS network chief Les Moonves] are motivated by corporate and political considerations - ratings rather than journalism."
