RNC Through Unique Eyes

(From The Convention Floor) – Mary Ellen Young, a Republican National Convention delegate from Missouri, is a longtime party stalwart from the Kansas City suburb of Holden.

Ms. Young and her delegation were given prime seats at the RNC, only feet from the podium, where she and her faithful spent the evening cheering on California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and first lady Laura Bush, among others.

The Missouri native is also one of only a handful of black women attending the convention.

On Tuesday evening, Young took some time to share her thoughts with NewsMax on a wide range of issues.

On Arnold Schwarzenegger:

"Arnold's speech was awesome. It was detailed, he did not just speak in generalities. He spoke in depth, with specifics, and things the president has accomplished - things that people need to think about, not just following a party because they have always voted that way.

"People need to look at the Republican Party and see what it does for our country. Look at their moral, their economic beliefs and see which party reflects what they believe in, and if they do that, they will become Republicans, just as Arnold laid out."

On party inclusivity:

"Our party is inclusive. Black Republicans have a lower profile [than their Democratic counterparts] because we are out working, we are business people, we are raising our children.

"We don't have the time to get in front of TV cameras all the time. The Republican Party is there and we are there working hard. They [the party] are working hard for everyone, not just promising things someone has to write a check for."

"There's no such thing as a free lunch. Every time someone promises you something, you should look at what they have actually done.

"The last administration, every time they brought someone of color to the White House, they were singing and dancing. In this administration, they are really part of the Cabinet.

"That is why we tell our children to do their homework, to stay off drugs, so they can have their own business and have good jobs.

"Everybody can't make it singing and dancing. Education and self-responsibility, those are important things. Those are what the Republican Party espouses."

On the importance of Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice:

"They are not symbolic. They would be symbolic if they were sitting in their [Cabinet] chairs as figureheads and someone else was calling the shots. These are people who themselves are thinking, making decisions and helping to set policy."

On participation (or lack of) by blacks and women in the party:

It's spin [(Democratic Party criticisms]), it's clearly spin ... look at the Cabinet. The Republican Party appointed the first black Supreme Court justice, the first black senator, the first [female] party chairman.

"People talk a good game, but who actually walks the walk? Again, are you in the White House singing and dancing? Or are you there in a position of power, a position of authority, part of the Cabinet? These are the things people should look at."

On the Bush speech to the convention:

"I think I want to see what any person wants to see. I want him to lay out specifics, not generalities. We are not here to get a warm, fuzzy feeling.

"We want to see specifics, and I believe the president will be positive. He does not have to knock another candidate. He's got his own credentials, he's got valid credentials."
