School Choice for Higher Education
Supporters of educational reform and school choice hope that Colorado's unique program of college tuition vouchers will catch on in other states.
Colorado's College Opportunity Fund provides $2,400 a year to resident students at government universities. Those at private colleges receive only half of that, still a big improvement over the previous total of zero.
"If the plan works in Colorado, voucher proponents may have a new model they can push," BusinessWeek magazine reports.
Washington's anti-choice Democrat governor, Gary Locke, vetoed a college-voucher bill passed by the state Legislature earlier this year. But he is retiring.
