Kerry on Imus: Hints Edwards V.P. Pick

Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry staunchly denied a New York Times report today that relations between himself and Sen. John Edwards had become strained - praising both the North Carolina Democrat and his wife so effusively he fueled new speculation that a Kerry-Edwards ticket may yet come to pass.

"We don't have a strained relationship. I don't know where that comes from," Kerry told radio host Don Imus.

Then the top Democrat unleashed a torrent of compliments about his opponent.

"I have great respect for John Edwards. We have talked many times during the course of this campaign on the telephone. We have talked before and after every single debate," Kerry said.

"I've sought John out on the floor of the Senate and he has sought me out, and we have sat together and just chatted about the campaign and issues."

The Massachusetts Democrat even talked up Edwards' wife, telling Imus, "I have great respect for him and great affection for his wife, Elizabeth, who's a terrific, smart, capable person, too."

Kerry's praise for Edwards came just moments after he talked about the importance of picking the right VP.

"Vice presidents have become more and more important as a partner in governing and I think it's a critical role," he told Imus. "If a president puts the vice president to work in the right way and has the right kind of relationship, it's a tremendous advantage to the country."

Kerry said the right VP pick would give him "a partner in governing and somebody who could cover a lot more territory and a lot more ability to pull people together and get things done."

A Kerry-Edwards ticket would be a political dream team, with a CBS News poll released over the weekend showing the Democratic duo leading Bush-Cheney 50 percent to 42 percent.
