Pro-choice Congressman Infuriates Democrats

During the presidential campaign, Sen. John Kerry shamefully bragged that he would do nothing to reform Social Security and even attacked President Bush for taking the politically risky step of trying to prevent the system's looming insolvency. Now a Democrat congressman is enraging the party's anti-choice establishment by supporting Bush's call for partial private accounts.

"There are some of us who are willing to work across party lines" on legislation to repair Social Security, Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Fla., said today.

"This is the only bipartisan bill that I know of," he said at a news conference where he announced he would serve as the chief Democrat supporter of legislation drafted by Rep. Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz.

Kolbe noted: "Bipartisanship is absolutely essential. ... It's too easy to demagogue this for one side or the other."

Bipartisanship? Tell that to San Francisco Democrat Nancy Pelosi and company, who are furious at Boyd's pro-choice stance.

Boyd acknowledged that obstructionists in his own party "didn't understand" the consequences of failing to save Social Security. He said he hoped to "educate" them. Good luck with that one, Congressman.
