Principal Apologizes for Prayer Satire

The principal of an Athens, Ga., high school apologized to parents this week for reading a biting satire entitled "The New School Prayer" over the school's public address system before the Thanksgiving break.

"I apologized to them today in another statement," Cedar Shoals High School Principal Tommy Craft told the Associated Press. "I said that there was no attempt to individualize or to bring ridicule on any particular person with the poem."

The satire, which has been circulating on the Internet since the early 1990s, is based on the children's prayer "Now I lay me down to sleep," but its verses use humor worthy of a "Saturday Night Live" skit to skewer political correctness and the banishment of religion in public schools.

Some excerpts:

Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule.
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.

If Scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a federal matter now. ...

We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles.
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.

It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot, my soul please take!

Though the cleverly worded "prayer" undoubtedly provoked laughter among most Cedar Shoals students, some said Craft's decision to air the satire was an attempt to proselytize.

"Basically, I found the poem offensive, but even if I didn't, I still would believe it crossed the line between church and state," Cedar Shoals parent Ginger Smith told the AP.

Clark County School Superintendent Lewis Holloway said he couldn't discuss whether any disciplinary action will be taken against Craft.

Stephanie Jaccarino contributed to this report.
