Corzine: World's People, Not Leaders, Back Kerry

New Jersey Sen. Jon Corzine tried to bail out Sen. John Kerry on Sunday on the question of why so many key world leaders have publicly endorsed President Bush in recent days.

When asked why British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Russian President Vladimir Putin have all indicated they'd like to see Bush re-elected, Sen. Corzine, D-N.J., told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg:

"The people in those countries believe we're on the wrong track, just as the people in America believe we're on the wrong track. The judgment in democracies really lies with the people."

Corzine didn't bother to address Kerry's claim earlier this year that a number of foreign leaders have told him in private meetings they'd like to see him defeat Bush.

When Malzberg pointed out that the foreign leaders who have expressed support for Kerry are pretty much limited to Fidel Castro, Yassir Arafat and Kim Jong Il, Corzine bristled.

"Stop, stop. That's hyperbole," he insisted, noting that the newly elected pacifist leader of Spain also backs Kerry.
