Cheney: Outing Mary Was Calculated
Vice President Dick Cheney rejected John Kerry's explanation on Wednesday that he was trying to pay the Cheney family a respectful compliment by calling Cheney's daughter "a lesbian" before a presidential debate TV audience of 50 million.
Noting that Kerry's campaign manager, Mary Beth Cahill, described Mary Cheney's private life as "fair game" immediately after the debate, Mr. Cheney told the Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes," "I think that showed that this whole thing was calculated."

"They made a conscious decision that this was something they wanted to do and that it was part of a political strategy," he told Sean Hannity. "I think that's what we found offensive."
Cheney added that it was "the first time I can recall where one candidate tried to drag the family of another to make a political point."
Asked how his daughter reacted to being labeled "a lesbian" to millions of viewers, Cheney was typically subdued, explaining, "She shared our sense that this was not appropriate."
