Sen. Hillary Clinton is sorry for "joking" that Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in Missouri. At least she's sorry she got caught making the dull-witted remark.
The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser Saturday for longshot Senate wannabe Nancy Farmer. For some reason Her Hillaryness introduced a quotation from the great freedom fighter Gandhi by saying, "He ran a gas station down in St. Louis."
After the Democrat mob inexplicably tittered at the unfunny comment, the former first lady allowed, "No, Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of the 20th century."
AP reported today: "After being approached by The Associated Press to clarify the remarks, Clinton suggested in a statement late Monday that she never meant to fuel the stereotype - often used as a comedic punch line - that certain ethnic groups run America's gas stations."
Hillary claimed: "I have admired the work and life of Mahatma Gandhi and have spoken publicly about that many times. I truly
regret if a lame attempt at humor suggested otherwise."
Michelle Naef, administrator of M.K. Gandhi Institute for
Nonviolence, said the senator's remarks "could be incredibly
harmful."
"I don't think she was, in any way, trying to demean Mahatma
Gandhi," Naef said in Memphis, Tenn. "To be generous to her, I would say it was a poor attempt at humor. Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, but I find it offensive when people use stereotypes in that way."
"Political speeches can't be like episodes of 'The Simpsons,'" said David Robertson, a political science professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
And imagine the uproar if Trent Lott had said such a thing. Of course, like her hubby, Sen. Clinton has a history of making the sort of racist remarks you might expect from Democrat Sen. Robert "KKK" Byrd.
