Gillespie: Kerry Is Soft on Defense
Sen. John Kerry's voting record shows he would weaken national security, GOP chairman Ed Gillespie said today.
He cited Kerry's call in 1984 for a freeze on nuclear weapons, his vote against the Persian Gulf War of 1991 and votes to freeze defense spending.
He noted that Kerry had tried several times to
cut spending for U.S. intelligence.
Kerry called the criticism "the greatest form of
flattery" as it underscored his status as the front-runner for the Democrats' presidential nomination.
"That's the debate I want to have. That is precisely the
strength I bring to the race," said Kerry, who argued that he had
voted for some of the largest defense budgets in history and
smarter weapons programs.
"Unfortunately, there are people who
have never met a weapons system they didn't like. I have."
