Frantic Leftists Scramble to Gang Up on Schwarzenegger

Wannabes on the left-wing fringe of California's gubernatorial race, namely Green Party nominee Peter Camejo and self-described "independent" Arianna Huffington, are considering sacrificing their loser campaigns in a desperate effort to defeat Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"Camejo was the first to broach the subject," the Sacramento Bee reported today. Pressed by supposed supporters, the Greenie issued a statement saying he "will not condemn those voters who feel forced to vote for a Democrat like Cruz Bustamante." (Oh no; there are others like him?)

Huffington's handlers say that, although the anti-choice activist is "greatly disappointed" with the corruption-plagued Lt. Gov. Bustamante, she thinks Schwarzenegger would be a "disaster."

She says she is considering quitting the race and endorsing Bustamante, whom she has attacked for "legalized bribery" in taking money from casino-owning Indians.

"I'm talking to a lot of supporters and people who are part of the campaign. I'm going to make a decision later this week," she said Monday in San Francisco.

"What is very important ... is to make sure that the state does not go to a Republican who is going to bring to the state the same disastrous economic policies we have in Washington," she said. "That is a very important consideration."

Democrats and other leftists are panicking as the Vito Corleone look-alike Bustamante yanks TV ads and remains out of sight for yet another day. (Perhaps he's busy hunting for a job he might actually be able to handle, such as an apprentice agitator for MEChA.)

"If the contest between Bustamante and Schwarzenegger is tight, political analysts say the lieutenant governor might need the voters who would otherwise back the two more liberal candidates," the Bee reported.

Bustamante's disastrous campaign, however, doesn't know how to win friends and influence people. In a slap at Huffington and Camejo, Bustamante's handler Richie Ross professed little concern about them and said his campaign was "certainly not going to whine" about their candidacies.

"They have a right to run, and they are running," he said. "People have a right to choose them, and some will. That's just the nature of this business."

Former Clintonista Leon Panetta, however, fretted, "If the recall wins, then it does create concerns on the Democratic side that you could clearly split the Democratic vote that could otherwise go to Bustamante."

Strange talk from a Clintonoid, considering that Bill Clinton's interference for Gov. Gray Davis has backfired and made Californians more likely to vote for the recall.

As the leftist San Francisco Chronicle grumbled today, "Even Gov. Gray Davis' advisers are predicting Schwarzenegger will win the Oct. 7 recall replacement race."

'Unholy Trinity'

What do Davis, Bustamante and Schwarzenegger have in common? American Life League's Crusade for the Defense of Our Catholic Church is targeting the politically expedient pro-abortion stances of these self-described Catholics.

The ad campaign denouncing this "Unholy Trinity" wonders why most bishops remain silent about the "grave scandal." That's something a lot of Catholics wonder.
