Bustamante Defies Court, Keeps Running Ads With Illegal Money

California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante keeps using disputed donations to air TV commercials even after a judge ordered that he return the millions of dollars, court documents filed Wednesday charge.

Bustamante's campaign attorney and top political strategist claim the governor wannabe cannot cancel the ads without breaching contracts with television stations. "But according to an employee of an NBC affiliate, a subcontractor for Bustamante's campaign inquired about canceling the spots — although Bustamante's chief strategist said no such inquiries have been made or authorized," the Los Angeles Times reported today.

Bustamante is running ads (which just happen to have been taped at a Bustamante-for-guv rally) denouncing Proposition 54, which would restrict Big Brother's ability to collect racial data.

Attorneys for GOP state Sen. Ross Johnson, who filed the lawsuit that prompted the judge's order, noted in the court filings that Bustamante could direct the TV stations to cancel the ads. "The defendants are moving slowly because it suits them," said attorney Eric Grant.

"Ross Johnson is in favor of Proposition 54," Bustamante mouthpiece Richie Ross said. "We are killing Proposition 54. He is doing everything he can to stop us."

And Bustamante appears to be doing everything he can do defy the court. The NBC affiliate contacted by the pro-Democrat Times said the TV stations "would likely reach a quick compromise with Bustamante" if the candidate bothered to ask.

Superior Court Judge Loren McMaster ruled Monday that Bustamante violated campaign law by accepting the donations and transferring the money to the race-baiting fund.

Where are all the "liberals" who so recently insisted, when Christians supported Alabama's Ten Commandments monument, that people must bow down and obey whatever any court decrees?

It looks as if those who were so eager to dump Gray Davis could wind up with an even bigger crook in charge of ruining what's left of California.
