Hillary to Gray Davis: You're on Your Own

It looks as if politically doomed Democrat Gov. Gray Davis won't be getting any more help from U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, who has apparently written off his chances to survive October's recall vote.

Asked yesterday whether she intended to stump for Davis in California before crucial vote, Sen. Clinton told "The Today Show" that she had already been there, done that.

"I was there weeks ago," she explained. "I'll leave it up to the people of California."

Only a day earlier California first lady Sharon Davis was telling Fox News, "President Clinton and Hillary are very good friends. We talk with them regularly, and they've given us a lot of advice. ... [Mr. Clinton is] able to communicate in a way that lets people know what you want to accomplish. And he's been working with my husband in that regard."

Meanwhile, Mrs. Davis seems to be borrowing a page from Tipper Gore's playbook, trying to loosen up her husband's stiff image by singing the praises of his kissing technique.

Davis told a radio audience that actress Cybill Shepherd's account to the San Francisco Chronicle two weeks ago describing her husband's liplock during a 1967 encounter on a Hawaiian beach was right on the mark.

"I can say after 20 years of marriage, he is still a good kisser," she insisted, according to the Hotline.
