For more than a year now reports have swirled that plans were underway for a liberal talk radio network to counter the impact of radio conservatives like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bob Grant.
Deliverance for left-wingers may finally be at hand, reports the New York Post's John Mainelli, who says the liberal network is set to launch in January - just in time for maximum impact on the 2004 presidential race.
New York radio bigwig Arthur Liu is said to be readying room for the liberal network on "one or more" of his four local outlets, the Post said.
"They're interested in leasing some stations," Liu told the Post, adding, "No deals yet, but we hope so."
The liberal radio network will reportedly be financed primarily by Sheldon and Anita Drobny - longtime big bucks Democrat donors from Chicago who have discussed the venture with Bill and Hillary Clinton as well as Al Gore.
While the identities of the behind-the-microphone talent are still secret, names that have been floated include Al "Mr. Obnoxious" Franken, Janeane "It's Not Cool to Protest Clinton" Garafalo and Bill "We're the Cowards" Maher.
A representative for the Drobnys told the Post that there have been "substantive discussions" with Garafalo, and Franken, who begged off last May citing the demands of his publishing schedule, could now be available.
Maher, however, seems to be enjoying the success of his new HBO show "Real Time."
Phil Boyce, programming director for New York's conservative powerhouse WABC Radio, didn't sound very concerned about any new competition from the libs.
"The idea is doomed to fail, but I admire them for trying," he told the Post.
