Schwarzenegger Misses Howard Stern Show

To the consternation of Howard Stern's radio fans, Arnold Schwarzenegger didn't appear on the popular show Thursday morning as scheduled.

The reason?

Schwarzenegger was all pumped up to do the show, sources say, but it was Stern's network that pulled the plug on the interview just hours before the appearance.

Under Federal Communications Commission rules, all candidates must be given equal time, a requirement that could have meant Stern having to interview all 135 gubernatorial candidates.

Schwarzenegger's campaign said Thursday that the Stern program is seeking a waiver from the FCC to have Arnold on the program for a brief interview.

The appearance on the Stern show would be part of Schwarzenegger's unorthodox campaign strategy, which began with his announcement on the Jay Leno program.

Stern is no political lightweight, and his large, independent listenership has played a role in helping to elect George Pataki in New York and Christie Whitman in New Jersey to their state's respective governships during the '90s. Stern strongly endorsed both candidates in their races.

Schwarzenegger apparently likes to keep his campaign confined to the celebrity circuit, a platform he is used to. His campaign confirmed that he is making arrangements to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show.
