Federal Judge May Delay Oct.7 California Recall Election
A federal judge in San Jose warns that he may postpone the California recall vote, now scheduled for Oct. 7.
According to the Associated Press, after hearing a claim Friday from a civil rights group that the speeded-up election is forcing changes in the voting process that require federal approval, U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel set a hearing for Aug. 29 and suggested he may delay the election at that time if federal approval hasn't been obtained by then.
Under the federal Voting Rights Act, any changes in the voting process must be pre-cleared by the Justice Department in places like Monterey County that have a history of low voter turnout. The judge also ordered Monterey County not to mail out its overseas ballots until the issues are resolved.
