Civil Rights Leader Blasts Dean for 'N'-word Fund Raiser

A Washington, D.C.-based civil rights leader is blasting Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean for presiding over a fund raiser where blacks were derided as "n----rs," a gay female referred to as "a big lezzie" and presidential rival Joe Lieberman made fun of for being an Orthodox Jew.

"These bigoted and racist attacks upon the Jewish, African-American and Gay Communities for profit are a disgrace and have no place in American politics," complained Kevin Martin, political director of the African-American Republican Leadership Council.

"Howard Dean has shown he is a candidate for racial division and hatred and his supporters are nothing more than the new century's Ku Klux Klan," Martin continued.

Martin's complaint comes as Dean's fellow Democrats, including rival Al Sharpton, have yet to express any outrage over the ugly incident, which took place last Monday and went unnoticed until the New York Post revealed the details this week.

As part of the evening's entertainment, "comedian David Cross used the N-word for blacks in a disjointed 'joke,'" reported the paper's Washington Bureau chief, Deborah Orin.

"Sandra Bernhard insulted Condoleezza Rice in racial terms with a 'Yes Massa' accent at another Dean fundraiser the same night. ... "

Slurs and profanity seemed to be the order of the evening, as Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Mary was derided as "a big lezzie" and President Bush was slammed as 'this piece of living, breathing s---.'"

Dean later described the language as "wrong," adding that he didn't have "much tolerance for ethnic humor."

But the top Democrat's comments did little to assuage Mr. Martin, who observed, "Howard Dean's campaign has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Robert Byrd wing of the Democrat Party is alive and well."
