From Mayor Carlos Mayans of Wichita, Kan., to Bush advisers Al Gonzales and Raul Romero, Latino Leaders magazine recently listed the most influential Latinos in the U.S.
The 42 named serve at all levels of U.S. government and head numerous political and business organizations.
Included in the list are two relatives of Fidel Castro, brothers and Congressmen Lincoln and Mario Diaz-Balert, R-Fla.; U.S. Senate candidates and just-resigned U.S. HUD and Treasury secretaries Mel Martinez and Rosario Marin; U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza; and John Sanchez, Southwest Regional Director for Bush-Cheney 2004.
How the magazine came up with the number 42 is a mystery, as several influential Latinos were excluded from the list. Among these are U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President George Herrera, former Bush judicial nominee Miguel Estrada, and Cuban American National Council President Guarione M. Diaz.
Though several of the highest posts in the list are Republicans of both Cuban and Mexican descent, the article snidely comments that of the two groups, most Cuban Americans are Republicans, and that to "truly make a splash in U.S. politics instead of the ripples Hispanics have made so far, we need to get everyone on board.”
