The controversial CBS movie "The Reagans" could soon be "a goner," reported Hollywood bible "Variety" on Monday.
"Three people connected to the production confirm that CBS entertainment chief Les Moonves is mulling not airing 'The Reagans' at all this November," the paper said.
Moonves could then decide to postpone the project indefinitely; or at least until he's satisfied with the finished product.
CBS editors have reportedly taken "a machete" to the presidential biopic, prompting director Robert Allan Ackerman to quit in protest.
Meanwhile, network executives stayed mum as media curiosity built over the weekend. A CBS spokesman reached Sunday afternoon tersely told "Variety," "We're not talking about 'The Reagans' today, we're talking about the CBS 75th anniversary."
As the firestorm of public outrage mounted, Moonves was also reportedly considering dumping the project on its sister cable network Showtime.
Either way, the final product - if and when it airs anywhere - is expected to bear little if any resemblance to the original script, which had the former president cursing and his wife hitting their daughter.
