Giuliani Could Beat Schumer, Poll Finds

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has amassed a mammoth war chest for his re-election next year even though he has no major opponent yet. But he should be scared: Rudy Giuliani could topple him, a new poll by Zogby International reveals.

The survey shows the popular Republican former mayor of New York City beat Schumer 52 percent to 43 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 points.

That's quite a feat, considering that in exit polls in 2000, Democrats outnumbered Republicans in the state 45 percent to 28 percent.

Dreier Won't Challenge Boxer

Meanwhile, there's good news today for one of the nation's most horrid senators. Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif., says he won't run against radical Democrat incumbent Barbara Boxer next year.

Dreier, a 12-term congressman and adviser to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, said people at the "absolute highest levels" had urged him to run.

Opinion polls show Boxer vulnerable, but the GOP hasn't yet found a big name to run against her.
