Ad by Clinton Impeachment Foes: Arnold Unfit to Be Governor

A group founded to defend President Bill Clinton against impeachment proceedings stemming from the Paula Jones sexual harassment case has produced a commercial contending that sexual misconduct allegations against Arnold Schwarzenegger make him unfit to be governor of California.

The group MoveOn.org was founded in 1998 in a bid to persuade Congress to censure Clinton rather than impeach him - even after the president was hit by allegations he attacked a White House volunteer inside the Oval Office and raped an Arkansas businesswoman in the 1970s.

But in an ad released this weekend, MoveOn.org warned, "If your mother is a woman, or your wife, or your daughter, or your sister ... you cannot vote for this man. Because Arnold Schwarzenegger has a serious problem with women."

Then, citing a quote from Schwarzenegger where he joked about a recent movie role where he dunked a female robot into a toilet, MoveOn's narrator urged, "Every woman and every man should vote no on the recall."

Campaigning against the recall on Saturday, Gov. Gray Davis said that Schwarzenegger's groping likely constituted criminal acts that could warrant prosecution.

"I believe those stories do raise serious questions about his ability to lead this state," Davis told a women's group in Oakland. He said that it's up to the authorities to decide whether to investigate or prosecute the sexual misconduct allegations, according to the Oakland Tribune.

Meanwhile, the Davis campaign was bombarding the homes of likely California voters with telephone messages from the impeached ex-president urging them to vote against Schwarzenegger.

It's not clear whether Clinton himself makes mention of the groping charges against the former actor in the message.
