California's GOP State Chairman Duf Sundheim warns that Democrats are so desperate to beat Arnold Schwarzenegger, they are currently scouring the state trying to dig up personal mud to use against him.
Appearing on the highly rated "Fox & Friends" show Wednesday morning, Sundheim said that Bob Mulholland, political director for the California Democratic Party, was heading up the dirt-digging operation.
So far, the Democrats have not made personal attacks against Schwarzenegger. A risque interview Schwarzenegger gave to Oui magazine has surfaced on eBay, but without Democrat fingerprints.
But knowledgeable California Republican sources tell NewsMax that Sundheim's comments are meant to pre-empt an expected, last-minute assault on Arnold Schwarzenegger and his character.
Democrats are no strangers to last-minute character assassination with little time for their Republican opponents to respond.
In 2000, on the weekened before the election, Democratic operatives leaked information that George Bush had once been arrested for drunk driving.
"We're bracing ourselves for a Friday-before-the-election Bruce
Herschensohn-type smear," one Republican operative told NewsMax.
The Herschensohn reference refers to the conservative Republican's 1992 Senate bid against Democrat Barbara Boxer.
The week before the election, Herschensohn was ahead in the polls.
On the Friday before the election, Boxer's campaign was behind allegations against Herschensohn, stating that he had visited a strip club.
Herschensohn lost the race.
What does this current election have to do with the 1992 episode?
Answer: Bob Mullholand. He was the key engineer of Barbara Boxer's come-from-behind win. That's why Arnold's camp has their seat belts on.
