WASHINGTON -- Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and country music stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood will open a Washington concert Saturday to coincide with the Live Earth concert series on climate change, the Smithsonian Institution announced Friday.

The National Museum of the American Indian's "Mother Earth" event will feature films, music, dancing and guest speakers, including scientists and cultural leaders from the American Indian community. The 12-hour concert is free and will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the museum's Welcome Plaza on the National Mall.

"This will actually be the first of the Live Earth concerts in North America," Gore said on CBS' "The Early Show." Gore originally had hoped to hold the primary U.S. show in Washington, but finding a suitable venue proved difficult.

"There were some naysayers who tried to say no, you cannot have a concert on the mall, but the Cavalry did not ride to the rescue, the American Indians did," Gore said.

Tim Johnson, acting director of the American Indian museum, said it is committed to help increase understanding of global climate change.

"There is no more important matter before us than the question of how to live sustainably on the Earth," said Johnson, a descendant of the Mohawk tribe.

The museum will make the broadcast of the "Mother Earth" event available to Live Earth, which will air on cable television and the Internet.

The seven-continent Live Earth series begins in Australia. Madonna, Metallica and Kanye West are among the top names listed to perform at sites including London, South Africa and near New York.

Live Earth is backed by Gore's effort to push global warming onto the world's political agenda.
