Pipe Explosion Closes U.S. Mission to United Nations
Stewart Stogel
Friday, July 20, 2007

NEW YORK -- Among the thousands of office workers affected by Wednesday's steam pipe explosion in midtown Manhattan, was the U.S. mission to the United Nations.

The U.S. delegation of roughly 200 people is housed in temporary quarters across from Grand Central Terminal while a new State Dept. facility is constructed near U.N. headquarters six blocks away.

Among those "impacted" by Wednesday's explosion was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Zalmay Khalilzad.

While Khalilzad's actual location when the steam pipe exploded has not been revealed, it likely would not have rattled the veteran diplomat.

Prior to arriving at the U.N., Khalilzad spent two years as U.S. ambassador in Iraq.

Having spent two years under siege in Baghdad's "Green Zone," explosions like that in New York City are probably no big deal to the White House's former "point man" in Iraq.
