U.S. Expresses Support for Mahmoud Abbas

WASHINGTON -- The White House expressed support Friday for the moderate government of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after a military takeover of Gaza by the radical group Hamas.

"We believe that the pathway to peace is through the negotiating table - not through violence and not through terrorism," White House deputy press secretary Scott Stanzel said, accompanying President Bush on a trip to Kansas.

Hamas held control of Gaza and occupied Abbas' captured office. The takeover formalized the separation between Gaza and the West Bank, which lie on either side of Israel.

"We will continue to work with those in the Palestinian population who have chosen the pathway to peace," Stanzel said on Air Force One. "As you know, that choice is being challenged in Gaza by individuals who have attacked the legitimate security forces of the Palestinian Authority. And these individuals are trying to extinguish the hopes of the Palestinian people for their own state."

The United States finds itself in the position trying to support the Palestinian people while not providing money for Hamas.

Stanzel said the United States provides support for security forces that report to Abbas.

"The State Department is actually looking at that support and that assistance to see what the best way forward is on that, and certainly the State Department and officials there have been very active on this issue, as well," he said.
