WASHINGTON -- The United States sees real opportunities to work with France with a new president in place, the White House said Monday.
President Bush will meet Nicolas Sarkozy at a Group of Eight summit in Germany in early June, White House spokesman Tony Snow said.
Sarkozy was elected president of France Sunday. He has been a strong admirer of the United States.
U.S.-French relations have been strained in recent years over the Iraq war, with French President Jacques Chirac a leading European voice against the conflict.
"We know that there have been areas of disagreement but on the other hand there are certainly real opportunities to work together on a broad range of issues," Snow said.
Bush spoke to Sarkozy by phone on Sunday.
"The president always hopes for close relations with France and despite some frictions we continue to work closely with France on a number of important issues during President Chirac's government," Snow said.
