Jon VanZile
Thursday, March 22, 2007

Side effects from vaccines are actually very common, but they are usually limited to a little bruising and soreness at the injection site. More serious reactions, including dangerous allergic reactions, should be reported to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS). A fund has been established for children who are injured by vaccines.

Today's recommended vaccines for children ages birth to 12, and a few of the side effects, are listed below. Vaccine mandates vary by state.

• Hepatitis B. • Haemophilus influenzae type b • Rotavirus • Diptheria, tetanus, pertussis (DtaP) • Pneumococcal • Polio • Influenza (yearly) • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR combined vaccine). • Varicella (chicken pox) • Hepatitis A. • Meningococcal (bacterial meningitis)
