Are We Ignorant, Uncaring, or Gutless?
Pat Boone
Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007

Well, the 2008 presidential campaign seems to be swinging into high gear already — and it's only February 2007!

Hillary, Giuliani, Obama, Dodd, Romney, McCain, Kucinich, and a growing gaggle of other candidates are "exploring," scheduling and fund raising as if the New Hampshire and Iowa primaries were already just around the bend.

Something quite ominous occurred this week, which has relevance to another campaign in full swing, one of even more lasting import to this nation's future than who our next president may be.

It's the campaign to corrupt America's soul.

The event, as reported on most media outlets, was the "outing" of two young women whom candidate John Edwards of North Carolina has put in charge of his Internet postings and communication. Although these two women are savvy in the use of the Internet and in disseminating info to millions, and that's why Edwards chose them to speak for him in such a responsible and crucial position, it was revealed that they are both searingly, caustically anti-Christian and anti-religion, period.

I won't repeat here the outrageous, blasphemous, filthy quotes from their own official blog sites, which the Edwards people must have known about. Suffice it to say, they are inexcusably angry, biased, and intentionally hateful, with no obvious motivation but anti-Christian bile. But the most ominous and troubling part is that candidate Edwards, when confronted with the public outcry about these women's inflammatory statements, said only that he didn't approve of their ideas, but he would continue to depend on and employ them!

What does this say about his candidacy, his competency, his respect for the people of the United States, and what kind of president he might be?

Story Continues Below

I can't speak to his ideas of faith or his respect of the Judeo-Christian principles on which this nation was founded. But I certainly can speak to the all-out, persistent, and increasingly successful war being waged against the faith and principles which motivated our founding fathers, and which permeate and validate our Constitution.

If there were an evil genius coordinating the perfect plan to undermine the basis for all morality in America, one who had control of most influential media — movies, television, popular music, newspapers, magazines, radio, and even ad agencies; if this genius could infiltrate the churches and many humanitarian organizations and convince them that the "old rules" no longer apply; and if he had the power to intimidate political leaders and judges into abandoning the "old rules" as well . . . He couldn't change our lives much more radically than they're already being changed.

Brent Bozell, in his latest Parents Television Council newsletter, details the astounding number of negative portrayals of religion and religious figures currently on network television, night after night after night.

He says "With most Americans professing a belief in God and a majority asking for programming which reflects that belief, it would seem logical that television would portray religion positively. But Hollywood doesn't listen to the people, and that is very evident when it comes to the topic of religion."

The PTC's seventh study of religion on broadcast television looked at one year of programming, over 2000 hours from September 2005 to August 2006. The following are just part of their alarming findings:

  • In 2005-2006, there were more negative depictions of religion than positive ones.

  • At no time during prime time, and on no network, did the positive portrayal of religion even hit the 50 percent mark!

  • A majority (57.8 percent) of the positive portrayals of religion were to be found on reality programs. By contrast, an overwhelming percentage (95.5 percent) of the negative portrayals of religion came from Hollywood-scripted drama and comedy programs; only 4.5 percent of negative portrayals of religion were found on reality shows. This is a graphic demonstration of how far TV producers and networks are removed from the real attitudes of their audiences. And how avidly they seem committed to changing those attitudes. And get this! The number of negative portrayals increased steadily with each hour of prime time. They constituted 31.9 percent of all treatments in the 8 p.m. hour, 33.9 percent in the 9 p.m. hour, and 44.4 percent in the 10 o'clock hour.

  • Devout laity—non-clerical individuals who profess religious faith (like you and me, most likely) were treated most negatively by entertainment programs. Over half (50.8 percent) of all entertainment television's depictions of laity were negative. Only 26 percent were positive.

Now, add to that shocking data what we all know is happening in rap, hip hop, and pop music, and the rampant rush by movie producers to assault all our senses and strip us of any vestige of moral concern—and you get the picture.

I'm not exaggerating; these are the cold facts.

The question is, do we care?

We're not ignorant, not if I and folks like Brent Bozell and Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity and Chris Ruddy, concerned citizens with some kind of public platform can keep speaking out, as we intend to.

So if we're not ignorant, are we just gutless, intimidated by liberal "secular progressives" around us?

Are we afraid to write sponsors and editors and network executives, expressing our disgust at what they're burying us and our kids under?

Will we never actually boycott the companies that pay for filth and sacrilege?

Have we lost the initiative, the courage, collectively and individually, to strike back economically and vocally, to join the growing ranks of Americans who say "We're mad at the hell you're trying to drag this country into, and we're not gonna take it anymore!"

Count me none of the above.

I'm not ignorant, I do care, and I sure ain't gutless. I'm doing what I can, and I hope you'll join me in resolving to do still more. Remember, this isn't an election we're talking about here; it's the battle to protect and defend our very way of life.
