'24' Hits Close to Home

On Monday night, Fox TV's smash hit "24" series dared to go where no other media has dared to go before — they showed a U.S. city being nuked by Islamic terrorists living right here in the good old USA.

The show's producers made no bones abut it.

This was meant to awaken a somnambulant American people to the presence of a threat nobody seems to want to think about, or for that matter, even consider possible.

Where the show's producers broke new ground was in showing the terrorists as here and very much present within our borders, and not merely in some far-flung Middle Eastern battleground.

Moreover, they did not hesitate to suggest that hiding under the banner of political correctness were terrorists and their abettors who conceal themselves among their innocent fellow Muslims much as the fellow terrorist insurgents in Iraq hide among the innocent civilian population.

In today's atmosphere of "diversity" and multiculturism worship, this sort of thing simply isn't permissible. The idea of profiling airline passengers based on their ethnicity, for example, outrages the left which is perfectly content to allow Muslims such as those six imams who behaved in a manner totally in line with the behavior of the 9/11 hijackers to get away with loudly proclaiming their alleged victimization at the hands of allegedly racist passengers and authorities.

In the new episode of "24," we are shown a civil rights activist, the sister of the president of the United States, all but running amok at the suggestion that members of the Muslim organization she represents being detained are potential terrorists. Subsequent events show that among the "innocent" detainees are genuine terrorists.

Story Continues Below

You can expect to hear great wailing and weeping and gnashing of teeth from the left over the mere suggestion by "24" that there are indeed terrorists among the Muslim community who wish great numbers of their fellow Americans dead and our cities in ashes.

It never occurs to them that this worldwide jihad and its fighters are not confined to the Middle Eastern region — that as sophisticated as they are in the art of covert warfare that they would not take advantage of a wide-open United States to infiltrate legitimate Muslim groups here.

These people are many things, but among them is not stupidity.

They are masters at the art of propaganda. In recent years they have had no trouble enlisting the anti-Iraq war U.S. media to join in portraying the war as a hopeless cause and furthering the illusion that American armed forces routinely commit atrocities against innocent Iraqi citizens. They have managed to make George Bush, and not the horde of ruthless Jihadist murderers the American peoples' real enemy.

Thanks to the atmosphere they have managed to create here, routing out the terrorists among us has become almost an impossibility. Every step taken by the administration to find the terrorists and traitors among us meets with media disclosures of the methods being used and accusations that they violate the civil rights of all Americans.

Given this, it is almost incredible that America has not been the victim of another 9/11 attack since that horrible event in 2001. And therein lies the problem.

Having been free of such attacks for the past six-plus years, we have been all but immunized from considering the fact that we remain target number one of Osama bin Laden and the Iranian-led jihad.

These people have shown they have great amounts of patience.

They strike only when they are thoroughly ready to strike, and as 9/11 showed, only when all the i's are dotted and all the t's crossed.

It is also worth considering that their failure to strike since 9/11 has had the effect of allowing Americans to drop their guard, and, like Homer's Trojans, ripe fruit for the enemy within.

Finally, in depicting the horror nobody wants to think about — of a nuclear attack on a U.S. city — "24's" producers showed just how easy such a catastrophe would be for a group of skilled terrorists to pull off.

I have a hard time putting out of my memory a couple of facts dealing with the possibility that there are already small nuclear devices here in the United States.

One is the warning of the late Russian general, Alexander Lebed that some 100 of so-called "suitcase" nuclear bombs were missing from his country's arsenal, with some of them here in the United States.

Second, that Col. Stanislav Lunev, the highest ranking Soviet military intelligence officer ever to defect to the United States from Russia, once revealed in NewsMax.com that Gen. Lebed was the only Russian official brave enough to make public the existence and disappearance from Russia of portable nuclear devices (suitcase bombs), designed and produced in the former Soviet Union for its "Spetsnaz" special operations forces.

Col. Lunev once told me that Lebed had disclosed the shocking information that some 100 of these suitcase nukes were deployed in the U.S. and other countries that Moscow had considered its main cold war enemies.

According to Col. Lunev, the nukes in the United States remained here.

So "24" was not far off in depicting the presence of a suitcase nuke here in the United States. Keep in mind that if the Islamic terrorists have gotten their murderous hands on one or more of them, "24's" fiction will become reality, and Americans will wake up to the fact that we are and have been at war — one that's going to last a long, long time, and learn that we must have patience.
