It is this reporter's opinion that, like it or not, we are at war with the Islamic fascists/Islamic fundamentalists. They have declared war on the West, and they are dead serious!

Any number of politicians, including President Bush, claim (contrary to all reason and evidence) that Islam is a "religion of peace." But we are speaking of the religion founded by the violence-prone Muhammad. It was he who established the practice of CONVERTING at the point of a sword. Only now the method of conversion has changed. (Recall that recently, two journalists kidnapped at the barrel of a gun were forced to convert in order to save their lives.)

My good friend Burt Prelutsky, top-flight journalist and present-day historian, has brought to my attention a brilliant dissertation by Robert Spencer: "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)." I thought I was familiar with the subject until I read Spencer's frightening facts.

For instance, did you know that

• Islam teaches that Muslims must wage war to impose Islamic law on non-Muslim states.
• American Muslim groups are engaged in a huge cover-up of Islamic doctrine and history.
• Today's Jihad terrorists have the same motives and goals as the Muslims who fought the Crusaders.
• The Crusades were defensive conflicts.
• Muslim persecution of Christians has continued for fifteen centuries and still goes on.

Here are a few modest proposals he offers:

• Stop all forms of American aide to Kosovo, Algeria, Somalia, Sudan, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, and even Iraq and Afghanistan; at the same time, grant full equality of rights to non-Muslim citizens.
• Reconfigure our global alliances. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and other exporters of Jihad should be put on notice that continued friendly relations with the U.S. depend on immediate and comprehensive denunciation of the Jihad.
• Call on Muslim states to renounce their expansionism.
• Initiate a full-scale "Manhattan Project" to find new energy sources so that we are no longer dependent on others. (President Bush took a first step toward this when he called for the construction of new nuclear power plants and oil refineries to decrease our dependence on foreign energy supplies.)

The Islamic fascists are dead serious, and we must be equal to their determination. They have clearly stated, "If you leave Islam, you must die!" When a Muslim converts to another faith, it brings a death sentence. This is not, mind you, extremist Islam; it is the Islamic mainstream based on a statement by Muhammad that "Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him." These words are backed by a similar statement in the Quran: "Whoever of you recants and dies a nonbeliever, his words shall come to nothing in this world and the next and are the companions of the fire forever."

Is there a call for war between Christianity and Islam? Certainly not. What is called for is a general recognition that we are already in a war between two vastly different ideas of how to govern states and societies – that in this struggle the West has nothing to apologize for and everything to defend. It is nothing less than a struggle for universal human rights, a concept that originated in the West and is denied by Islam.

Remember the recent furor brought about when Pope Benedict XVI dared to recall that a Benedictine emperor of the 14th century had spoken of the cruelty and viciousness of that period. The present-day pope was besieged and threatened by the Muslim community and was forced to call a conference of 21 Muslim nations to explain that he was merely recalling historic facts.

Robert Spencer reveals to us how quickly Europe is being Islamized, so quickly in fact that even historian Bernard Lewis (speaking of Islamic radicalism and terrorism) told the German newspaper Die Welt that "Europe will be Islamic by the end of the century." He believes that if the demographic trends continue, France, Holland and other Western European nations could have Muslim majorities by the middle of this century.

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, President Bush warned the world, "You're either with the terrorists or you're with us." But because of Washington's refusal to acknowledge who the terrorists are and why they are fighting, Bush's warning has been obscured. Now, five years after the terrorist attacks, we still have not determined how American foreign policy will be adjusted to defeat the goals and tactics of our Jihadist opponents.

It is time we acknowledge that we are facing a renewed Jihad. This is not far-fetched. Jihad terrorists have declared war on the United States and other non-Muslim nations. Today's Jihad terrorists have the same motives, the same goals, as the Muslims who fought the Crusaders. All the U.S. and Western European countries need to do is to identify the enemy as they have identified themselves. Again, the words of President Bush: "You're either with the terrorists or you're with us."

Muhammad did not teach peace and tolerance; he led armies and ordered the assassination of his enemies to declare war on Jews and Christians and to make the world in which we live an ISLAMIC WORLD. Praise is due Robert Spencer for telling the truth that few in the U.S. or Europe wish to face. He has issued a clarion call for the defense of the West before it is too late. We must heed these warnings and pull our heads out of the sand.
