The Sewer Is Backing Up
John L. Perry
Friday, Sept. 22, 2006

Two events occurring almost simultaneously this week sent American leftists into a panic, as what they have flushed down the toilet is coming around again.

  • Event One: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Iranian Prime Minister Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, those Beavis and Butthead foul-mouths of Third World back-alley politics, split their pants at the United Nations General Assembly, for all the world to see and hear.

So there's no need repeating their libel here.

Within a few hours, the vulgar comic act of Chavez and Ahmadinejad, not George W. Bush, became the object of scorn and resentment. That wasn't supposed to happen.

  • Event Two: President Bush's popularity in the opinion polls – other than those cooked up by the New York Times and CBS – rose noticeably since the 9/11 fifth anniversary.

What happened at the U.N. is only adding greater approval for the president. That wasn't supposed to happen, either.

So abrupt was the change in direction of political fortunes that the loudest Bush-bashers in the Democratic Party fell all over themselves defending the Republican president.

    Story Continues Below

But ... But, the Hispanic Vote!

Here's what San Francisco's very own Nancy Pelosi, the far-left minority leader of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives, had to say just as quickly as her speech-writers could crank it out for her:

"Hugo Chavez fancies himself a modern day Simon Bolivar, but all he is is an everyday thug. Hugo Chavez abused the privilege that he had, speaking at the United Nations. He demeaned himself and he demeaned Venezuela."

    Hello, is that you, Nancy?

And here is Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), who is commonly heard rasping away about impeaching his president:

"An attack on Bush is an attack on all Americans. You do not come into my country, my congressional district, and you do not condemn my president. ... [Do] not think that Americans do not feel offended when you offend our chief of state."

Has Our Boy Done Something Rash?

It had to have been Charlie; no one else has his dulcet, mellifluous voice.

Until the U.N. fiasco, coming right on the heels of Bush's good news in the polls, the rabid left resembled nothing so much as a junk-yard attack dog as it raced, barking and frothing, toward the hapless president – until it was jerked to a halt as it reached the end of its chain.

Usually, officeholders' U-turns, performed not in good taste or fair play but out of sheer political necessity, are executed with slow, deliberate measure, so as not to attract needless attention or suggest even a hint of acknowledgement of error.

Not in this instance. What the left feared more than committing, heaven forbid, an unpopularity was to be caught on the drowning side of a sea change in voter sentiment.

The 'Devil' Made Rove Do It

Democratic political strategists may be forgiven if they mused whether Karl Rove had put Chavez and Ahmadinejad up to all that forensic flatulence at the U.N.

How dumb could those clowns from Caracas and Tehran have been? Who in the world was giving them advice? Who sold them the wrong-headed idea Bush was a four-letter household word all across this land? And that they could cash in on it by barging into the United States and making a mess on the living-room rug.

The only logical answer would seem to be they made the colossal mistake of reading and listening to America's leftist masscomm – and, worse, actually believing it.

Poor politicians – and the Democrats are not alone in this. They have become total slaves to the Great God of Polling. They actually believe the foolishness the pollsters pump out at them.

    People Who Know People

The blushing truth is these recent polls are no more accurate than the earlier ones that had Bush down in the cellar eating sauerkraut. Anyone who really knows his country – its people, its history, what makes it tick – doesn't need the help of some social statistician on the phone during the dinner hour inquiring about "what America thinks."

But the goofy gospel according to the pollsters is the sacred "science" the politicians rely on to tell them what positions they should take. Bush seems to be among the few who don't give a fig about polling figures.

    They've Used Worse Language

Fortified by the pseudo-statistical claptrap supplied by opinion polls, leftists have felt secure in calling Bush nastier names than Beavis and Butthead did at the U.N. This is the excrement Democrats have been gushing at the American electorate throughout Bush's tenure.

Now the sewer is backing up all over them, and they manifestly do not like what assails their olfactory senses.
