It is this reporter's opinion that with each passing day in the remnants of the Bush lame-duck administration we must note a growing backdoor policy in which Bush and company give us a choice: Do it our way or there will be no way. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's the creation of a North American union with Mexico and Canada, a giant highway from the southernmost tip of Chile to the tiptop border of Canada, "NAFTA Plus," or something as simple as unanswered letters to his own constituency.

Take an incident revealed by the Minutemen as they gathered at Laredo, Texas – that area picked because of the drug war raging across the border with Nuevo Laredo, on the front line of the fighting against the illegal immigration invasion coming across from Mexico.

At this gathering, known as "Operation Sovereignty," Congressman Steve King, Republican from Iowa, told the Laredo crowd of his frustration with the president's failure to answer his letter. Said King, "I called the White House for two and a half months asking for an answer to my letter, then two weeks ago I told the White House, 'If you cannot or will not answer my letter, I will reveal its content.'"

And with that, King revealed his letter of June 23 in which he asked the president, King's fellow Republican, to answer five specific questions:

1. Is there such a thing as too much immigration?

2. If so, then how much is too much – too much legal? too much illegal?

3. How many people would be given legal status in the U.S. over the next 20 years if Senate Bill 2611 (S. 2611, Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act) were signed into law?

4. Would you agree to an annual cap on the number of immigrants allowed into the U.S.?

5. If the federal government cannot stop the illegal immigration of individuals who work ILLEGALLY in the U.S., how do you propose we stop $65 billion worth of illegal drugs entering our country every year?

With Jim Gilchrist of the Minuteman Project at his side, the two demanded an answer from the Bush administration. Said Gilchrist: "On 9/11, five years ago, I decided to come forward to secure our borders so another 9/11 could never happen. Five years later the Bush administration has done nothing to prevent the thousands of drug dealers, criminals and terrorists from entering the U.S. ILLEGALLY across our wide-open border with Mexico. The destiny of our nation hangs in the balance."

Said King to the president: "You say your 'immigration plan' is based on the promise of enforcement. We have seen only a diminishing effort. Neither the Minutemen nor I are willing to accept a proposal based on an empty promise if border security and domestic enforcement cannot be achieved."

Thus spoke Congressman King, a member of the president's own party, and James Gilchrist at the Minuteman rally on the Mexican border. Operation Sovereignty expects to draw hundreds of Minuteman volunteers to the Texas border at Laredo in the next two months. But neither King nor the Minutemen expect an answer from a president apparently adopting his own backdoor policy.
