Reduce Cellulite with Caffeinated Stockings?

Scientists at an Austrian lingerie company have found a new way to reduce cellulite: pantyhose impregnated with microcapsules of caffeine.

Using coffee subcutaneously to control the appearance of the lumpy, fatty tissue, which frustrates up to 90% of all women in the United States, is not a new concept. Caffeine derivatives, such as methylxanthine, have been the main ingredient of many firming creams for the last three years.

The theory is that the chemicals help to reduce fluid retention, thereby, temporarily smoothing out the skin's surface. This is especially important for ladies' thigh areas where skin can become extremely thin and fat deposits may be more pronounced.

"No cream will get rid of cellulite," Linda Wells, editor-in-chief of Allure magazine told Medical News Today, however it may "help the appearance of cellulite".

But, it is the appearance that counts.

Cosmetic dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Mitchell Goldman, who is also the director of La Jolla Spa in California, published his research findings to the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. Nearly 76% of women, 25 out of 34, lost an average of a half inch of thigh circumference by applying a topical skin care creams that contained caffeine.

Additionally, companies such as Neutrogena and Avon have conducted tests which state that 25 to 90 percent of participants reported smoother skin in their problems areas by using similar products.

Still, many scientists remain skeptical about the coffee bean's ability to make people look better.

Lisa Donofrio, a professor of dermatology at Yale University School of Medicine, said that there is no scientific proof that the compound works.

"Cellulite is a storage pattern of superficial fat," She said, adding that it is impossible to truly test the results of the product since there are no scientific ways to measure the orange-peel skin or its reduction.

Yet buyers are flocking to the web site of the stockings' sole distributor of the perked-up pantyhose, Tightsplease.com. The United Kingdom's largest online hosiery store charges $50 for three pairs, which last through approximately four rounds in the washing machine.

"The response has been phenomenal," said Site director Charles Duncombe, who was originally skeptical about the product.

Tightsplease has received orders for over 20,000 pairs of the Slim Fit 20 hose since its launch 18 months ago. Duncombe mused "I can count on one hand how many customers have called to say the pantyhose don't work."
