Book Review: "Minutemen: The Battle to Secure America's Borders"
Authors: Jim Gilchrist and Jerome Corsi
Publisher: World Ahead Publishing

President Bush called them "vigilantes," the left-wing media was aghast that ordinary Americans would dare to stick their noses into border security, and Mexican officials were enraged over their threat to stem the nearly unrestricted flow of illegal aliens across the border.

But it is said that there's nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come, and Jim Gilchrist proved the truth of that by organizing the border watch group the he named Minutemen.

He set out to do the seemingly impossible job of organizing a modern-day body of Minutemen, recruiting and training the thousand volunteers who flocked to his call, and putting a well-trained group of volunteers into a high-risk environment without creating the myriad problems foreseen by the media. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., was originally among those who feared the consequences of putting a group of ordinary Americans in the powder keg atmosphere along the Mexican border. In a forward to the book, he shared the media's doubts about the wisdom of Gilchrist's plans.

"Citizens patrolling along the border could easily encounter dangerous armed drug smugglers," he wrote. "What if some 'crazies' infiltrated the group and shot some unarmed migrant? Whatever the good intentions of the organizers, the whole thing might spin out of control."

Tancredo wrote that he kept a close eye on the movement as it developed and was soon very impressed by what he saw. Gilchrist and his allies knew exactly what they were doing, had set up orientation and training sessions that promised that volunteers would know all the rules and limitations, and had created a well-disciplined force that posed no problems for law enforcement in the border areas.

Gilchrist was well equipped for the job he took on. A battle-scarred Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, he was appalled by the federal government's utter failure to stem the tide of illegal immigration. "This is an invasion, not a visit by neighbors asking for a cup of sugar," he writes in "Minutemen."

"It's a raging invasion by illegal immigrants who are pouring unchecked into America. It could not be more obvious or more serious."

Gilchrist was inspired by such patriots as fellow former Marine George Putnam, a veteran of 70 years of broadcasting who uses his daily radio show on KRLA to sound the alarm that America was being invaded, and Tombstone Arizona newspaper owner Chris Simcox, who had been sending groups of four or five volunteers to monitor the border. Gilchrist decided to follow suit on a larger scale and organize what became the Minutemen.

He and Corsi go into great deal about how the group was organized and trained. But "Minutemen" is far more than a retelling of the group's history. It is the most complete and frightening account of what the authors call "The Trojan Horse Invasion," and the perils it poses for America's future.

The authors warn about the bankrupting of our welfare system and the already overstretched treasuries of America's federal, state and local governments. "A nation with an advanced welfare system such as ours cannot afford to leave our borders open," the authors state, observing that it's as if we are saying "whatever we have is there for the taking. We don't care anymore. We're here to be plundered."

They report that by 2025 America could end up with an underclass of 100 to 150 million poor, uneducated people supported by a severely taxed middle class of 150 to 250 million people, transforming our once proud nation into a "sorry tragedy of a third world country."

They cite crime as "Mexico's No.1 export" and detail the invasion of the street gangs and drug cartels, but say that American officialdom will not do what has to be done to curtail illegal immigrant crime because of political correctness.

The Manhattan Institute's Heather MacDonald wrote: "Law-abiding residents of gang-infested neighborhoods may live in terror of the tattered gangbangers dealing drugs, spraying graffiti and shooting up rivals outside their homes, but such distress cannot compare to a politician's fear of offending Hispanics."

The reality of illegal immigration and the threat it poses to all Americans is meticulously explained in this book. It will frighten the wits out of you. The next best thing to joining the Minutemen is to read this book and act in the many ways the authors suggest. Your future may depend on it.
