The Marriage Amendment Is the Will of the People
Philip V. Brennan
Wednesday, June 7, 2006

Oh my goodness, what could George Bush be thinking, going all out for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as an arrangement solely between a man and a women? Why, he must be pandering to his "conservative base," merely seeking to get his poll numbers out of the basement. How could he be so cynical?

That's the current line we're hearing from the National Socialist Democrat Abortion Party (NSDAP) and its minions in the Marxist mainstream media. The president's sudden decision to push for an amendment to the Constitution, they tell is, is simply a demagogic appeal to the very worst elements of American society – that ragtag army of Hillary's vast right-wing conspiracy also known as Red State conservatives, who are up in arms over the movement to allow men to marry men and women to marry women and, who knows, eventually even multiples of the same.

Listen to Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., as he brays the Democrat donkey's response to the president's call for a marriage amendment. Republicans, he charged, "kicked off their campaign of dividing the country instead of addressing the real priorities of American families." He ticked off the challenges "record high gas prices, skyrocketing health-care costs and an intractable war in Iraq."

Instead of addressing these issues, Reid said, the GOP, in the person of Senator Frist, "has chosen to put the politics of division ahead of real progress by pushing for a debate on a divisive amendment that will write discrimination into the Constitution."

That's some mouthful from the nation's leading champion of the politics of division, designating a commonsense argument that marriage is what it has always been from the beginning of time – it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Adam or Eve and Eve – an arrangement between a man and a woman, as "discrimination."

Ah, c'mon, Harry you know better than that. Reiterating an established fact and enshrining it in the Constitution is not an act of discrimination, it's a statement of fact – a fact that civilized societies have accepted without question from time immemorial. Those who dispute that fact are not being discriminated against, they are being identified as either badly mistaken or as deliberately ignoring what they know to be the truth but refusing to accept it.

They assume the role of victim, when they are no less victimized than any group – criminals, terrorists, etc. – that challenges the morals and norms by which society has always lived and is forced to bear the consequences of their dissent.

Story Continues Below

In coming forward now to state his support of the amendment, the president is not venturing into new and uncharted territory. He has always insisted that marriage is solely between a man and a women. In pushing for the amendment, he is seeking to prevent unelected judges from defying the expressed will of the people of a state by striking down state laws that define marriage as what it is, a union between a man and a women and only as a union between a man and a woman.

Only an amendment to the Constitution can achieve that aim.

This is a genuine concern, given that it has already happened a number of times – judges declaring state laws addressing the issue invalid and nullifying the expressed will of the people.

What the demagogues of the left refuse to accept is the undeniable fact that the family is the basic unit of society. Anything that threatens the family threatens the very stability of society. Destroy the family and you sow the seeds of the destruction of society.

To the Left, however, government is the basic unit of society. It must take precedence over such outmoded concepts as the sanctity of the family. If some wacko liberal concept threatens the family, the family – not the concept – must be sacrificed.

To get back to the main point: The President is not seeking to impose his will on the American people, he is responding to their will. The overwhelming majority of the American people oppose same-sex marriage If by siding with the majority of the people he gains political points for himself and his party, that's merely a bonus. His motivation, however, is to do what the majority of Americans believe in their hearts and minds is the right thing to do.

The problem with the Democrats – a party firmly in the hands of a vast collection of left-wing crazies – is their acceptance of a concept that most rational human beings consider outrageous, if not laughable. Only woolly-headed liberals can find some way to view marriage as an open-ended arrangement that can involve all manner of pairings, from same-sex unions to polygamy and bestiality.

Just about every sane individual on the face of the earth understands that the purpose of marriage is twofold – the union of a man and a women who want to spend their lives together, and who agree to accept the biblical command to be fruitful and multiply.

Adam and Adam and Eve and Eve may well want to enjoy the fruits of marital union, but they cannot produce offspring, thereby negating one of the twin purposes of marriage. Their relationship is dry and sterile, and elevates selfishness to secular sacrament.

Despite the shrill cries of the Left, the nation is on the cusp of joining Europe and Japan in having a birth rate below what is required for a society to replace itself. It is now being suggested by the Left that to the causes of the declining birth rate, widespread use of contraception and abortion, same sex-marriage – another form of contraception – be added.

Keep in mind, had it been Adam and Adam or Eve and Eve in the Garden of Eden, none of us would be here today. Fortunately, God saw to it that it was Adam and Eve, and we've been around ever since.
