1. David Hasselhoff's Weepy Remedy

David Hasselhoff has been making the rounds lately. He's promoting his spot in Adam Sandler's latest film, "Click."

He's also beating the drum for his new gig in Simon Cowell's reality TV show "America's Got Talent." Hasselhoff as a judge of talent? Guess "America's got irony" too.

The oft-panned former "Baywatch" actor, who was actually part of the "Idol" finale audience, keeps getting asked why he began to boohoo during the show.

These days it seems whenever stars get uncomfortable, all they have to do is mention in disparaging terms the two words that will soothe a savage reporter: George Bush.

Apparently, Hasselhoff thinks that the president could better manage the world's problems if he did a little more sobbing himself.

Hasselhoff explained that the guy next to him at the "Idol" show had cancer, which prompted the actor to cry.

But the Hoff added the following: "Is it wrong for a grown man to cry? Maybe if we had more emotion in the White House we wouldn't be in this mess we're in."

The Left Coast Report guesses that this means the messes of Iraq, Iran and North Korea are just a few sniffles away from being resolved.

2. Jon Stewart's Dem Dilemma

Lately Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" has been lampooning Republicans a lot more than Democrats.

It's become so obvious to conservatives they've labeled the Comedy Central cable show just one more part of the left-tilting mainstream media.

If Stewart has been trying to assist the left, he might be surprised to find out that he may have inadvertently helped the GOP. So indicates a study by a couple of political scientists at East Carolina University.

Democrats typically try to get young people to go to the polls because it is assumed that the vast majority of them will vote for the donkey party's candidates. (You may recall Diddy's "Vote or Die" campaign and Cameron Diaz's bizarre sloganeering in which she told young Americans, "If you think rape should be legal, then don't vote.")

East Carolina's Jody Baumgartner and Jonathan S. Morris showed some of Stewart's show coverage of the 2004 presidential campaign to one group of college students while exposing another group to coverage of the same campaign by "The CBS Evening News."

The researchers then measured students' attitudes toward politics and toward Bush and Kerry.

While the college students became more negative after watching "The Daily Show," they also said they had less confidence in the political system and the news media overall.

The study concluded that the pessimistic perception of candidates would keep young folks from going to the polls.

The Left Coast Report points out that since Stewart's news spoof is beloved by the same college students that Dems have been wooing, Dem strategists will probably start lobbying Stewart to host the Oscars again.

3. Kevin Federline's Cause Celeb

It's not easy being married to a celebrity.

Britney Spears' spouse, Kevin Federline, has been having some difficulty establishing his identity as the new Vanilla Ice.

Apparently, Federline is taking a cue from Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, and Bono and is setting out to promote a cause in which he passionately believes.

You've heard of celebs working to save the rain forest, save the gorillas and save the whales . . .

Well, Federline is campaigning to save the one-cent coin.

Britney's hubby recently visited Times Square to attend his very first charity event. He showed up in an armored truck covered with pennies - 120,000 of them.

"I'm here with Virgin Mobile to bring the power back to the penny! I feel good about the penny! I'm glad to give it back to these charities," Federline yelled to the crowd.

In a flourish he held up a penny and then dropped it into the donation slot of the truck, where people can donate pennies to charity, and sign the Common Cents group's penny-saving petition.

Of course, it's not all selflessness and "save the penny" at work here: Virgin's owner Richard Branson is using K-Fed to try to make a pretty penny from his new Virgin Mobile Penny Texting text messaging service.

The Left Coast Report thinks Federline should have had the good cents to choose a better cause.

4. Katie Couric's Hillary Play

Taking a page from the Hillary Clinton playbook, TV morning host-turned-evening newscaster Katie Couric is going on a listening tour.

The soon to be CBS anchor will be touring a half-dozen American cities and having forums with residents to determine the kind of news broadcast she'll unveil this September.

Katie's listening tour is still in the planning stages but events in Denver and San Diego have already been scheduled for July.

Apparently, Couric came up with the ear inspiring idea so that she could get a sense of which issues are on the minds of Americans and how folks feel about media coverage.

There are no plans to put participants on camera so they will supposedly be able to freely speak their minds.

The Left Coast Report says if Katie drops anchor in your town tell her to do something brand new for CBS - unbiased reporting.

5. Reese Witherspoon Sues Over Bogus Baby Bump

There's an old maxim: Before you bring up the pregnancy subject you better know for certain that the woman really is.

Everybody knows that you never ask a woman whether she's expecting unless you already know the answer is yes. A mistake can be fatal.

Star magazine recently found out about the crucial need to carefully research stories especially when they involve celebrity pregnancy.

Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon filed a lawsuit against the periodical claiming that a story about her being with child is false.

The allegations in the documents, which were filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, explain why Witherspoon is so livid.

"Contrary to the fabricated cover story, the true facts are that [Reese] is not pregnant, does not have a 'baby bump' and has not otherwise gained weight such that she has had to resort to wearing 'empire-waist dresses,' 'baggy clothing,' or an 'old-fashioned 1920s bathing suit,'" Witherspoon alleged in her lawsuit.

The Left Coast Report remarks that the Star is lucky it didn't publish a story like that about Greta Van Susteren.
