One Reporter's Opinion: The Senate Sellout of American Workers
George Putnam
Friday, June 2, 2006

It is this reporter's opinion that by a vote of 62 to 36 the Senate of the United States showed its contempt for American workers by forcing them to compete for jobs with 10 to 20 million, some say 30 million, illegal aliens. The Senate wants to reward with amnesty.

These senators are by and large millionaires many times over. Their concern is cheap labor and nannies for the rich – not American workers. The Senate's arrogance and cavalier disregard of the will of the American people will not be forgotten. Come November they will pay for this dereliction of duty.

We have spoken repeatedly of the Senate measure – the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act (CIRA, S.2611) – which the Heritage Foundation refers to as the most dramatic change in immigration law in the last 80 to 100 years. Compare its overall impact with the creation of Social Security or Medicare. The bill would give amnesty to 10 million illegals and quintuple the rate of legal immigration into the U.S. Under S.2611, 103 million new immigrants from all over the world would come here within 20 years.

Even as we debate the issue in Washington, there is an increase reported of illegals pouring into the U.S. However, there may still be hope. Rep. Peter King, Republican from New York, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, calls the controversial Senate bill on immigration reform "a dead duck." King cannot imagine how the Senate bill could ever be considered in the House of Representatives when the overwhelming majority of Republicans are against it.

Story Continues Below

King says, "This is AMNESTY. The more the senators deny it, the more the president denies it, this is AMNESTY and the American people want no part of it."

Says King, "I've never seen a disconnect between the will of the people and the actions of elected officials as we've seen in the Senate."

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, refers to the president's "path to citizenship" as a buzzword for AMNESTY. He says, "The Senate bill passed last week would offer a guest worker program to bring in new foreign workers and citizenship for millions of illegals already in the country." Sensenbrenner shouts "NO!" when asked whether he would accept any legislation that would put illegals on a "path to citizenship." He says there is no compromise on amnesty.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, unveils ten flaws in the amnesty and guest worker sections of comprehensive immigration reform bill (S.2611). Grassley charges the so-called immigration reform bill being debated in the U.S. Senate as "riddled with loopholes and flaws." Says Grassley: "I was burned once in 1986 when I voted for amnesty believing it would solve our problems. Now we have a 12 to 20 million illegal immigrant problem and I'm not going to be burned again."

The flaws pointed out by Senator Grassley are not accidental; they are carefully thought out to insure that the maximum number of people will be able to legalize their status with minimal obstacles. Grassley, during his speech on the Senate floor, outlined nearly 30 flaws within only two sections of S.2611.

Grassley says, "The employer sanction provisions of the 1986 immigration reform act were gutted by including a single word: KNOWINGLY." This meant that unless the government could prove that an employer actually knew the employee was here illegally, there could be no sanction. As a result, if the illegal applying for a job has any identification, no matter how phony, the EMPLOYER is immune from sanctions. If the word KNOWINGLY had been left out of the law, there would have been widespread prosecutions of employers for hiring illegals.

Giant companies like Wal-Mart, Tyson Foods and others use "illegal alien brokers" to bring in illegal workers by the thousands, supplied in advance with forged identification. It is a complete myth that these people come here to "look for work." They have jobs before they ever cross the border, and by using the "hands-off system," the employer escapes any liability.

The Senate bill S.2611 is a complete sellout of the American worker. We debate the issue over and over again. There is one way to stop the invasion of America: Kill S.2611, close the border, lock up the greedy employers and cut off the freebies, and the illegals will go home.
