On June 12 a New York Times article opened with a sentence that described author Ann Coulter as "in need of flogging," as well as "vicious," "mean-spirited," "despicable" and a "hate monger."
With Coulter's recent book,"Godless: The Church of Liberalism," now the best-selling book on Amazon.com, the last sentence of the lengthy NYT rant reads: "The fact she is one of the leading political writers of our age says something about the rest of us."
As a life-long Democrat my view of myself and our party has benefited from the writings of Ann Coulter. I see her as a satirist worthy of literary praise - and as a legitimate critic of the self-righteous pseudo-liberalism that now endangers our party's survival. Since World War II, I have been a regular reader of The New York Times - which in my view has deteriorated in recent years into a partisan propaganda machine.
Since 1996 when it supported the re-election of Bill Clinton the Times has been publishing anti-Republican demagogic propaganda directed against Republican Christian evangelicals whom intolerant psuedo-liberals denounce as "right wing extremists."

As a satirist, Coulter understandably enjoys a literary license to describe liberals as "Godless." The Times article denounces the "Godless" book particularly for the description of "The Witches of East Brunswick," a name which Coulter brands those few New Jersey widows who have joined with anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan in denouncing the Iraq War.
She adds: "These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles and stalked by grief-arazzis. I have never seen people enjoying their husbands deaths so much."
Coulter has a style reminiscent of the great Irish satirist Jonathan Swift who in his day was denounced by his critics for his strident ridicule of his political opponents.
Coulter's ridicule of Sheehan and the New Jersey widows is admittedly strident. But like that of Swift, her stridency is rational. Sheehan and her widowed supporters have obviously found joy in denouncing Bush.
