1. Critics Adore Al Gore, the Movie

Elite news publication film critics normally don't heap praise on documentaries, especially when they're essentially filmed lectures.

But when it comes to the latest pseudo-scientific, pro-global-warming piece of cinematic propaganda called "An Inconvenient Truth," superlatives abound.

Keep in mind that the film is all Al Gore, all the way through.

Still, the Hollywood Reporter calls the celluloid Gore speech a "vivid and vital activist movie."

The New York Times dubs it "intellectually exhilarating, and, like any good piece of pedagogy, whets the appetite for further study."

The Los Angeles Times views it as "highly persuasive."

USA Today refers to it as "illuminating, fascinating and sometimes frightening."

And Time magazine calls Gore's faux fear flick "briskly narrated," "handsomely illustrated," "sobering" and "ultimately alarming."

The Left Coast Report thinks a more appropriate title for the film is "A Convenient Whopper."

2. Dixie Chicks' Sorry 'View'

The country-crooning threesome, the Dixie Chicks, has been better known of late for politics than for music.

But currently the group is garnering attention for erratic apologies.

Lead singer Natalie Maines recently rescinded an apology offered to President Bush in 2003 for a statement made at a London concert in which she said she was "ashamed" that the president was from her home state.

Now she says she doesn't feel the president "is owed any respect whatsoever."

The Chicks recently did, however, see fit to apologize to the hosts of "The View," after, in a test of whether the group should appear on the popular ABC morning program, Chicks member Emily Robison asked Time magazine, "Would Bruce Springsteen do 'The View'?"

Hell hath no fury like "The View" gals scorned.

An on-air Meredith Vieira said, "We are furious. This is obnoxious, obnoxious. We started these girls – back in 1998, they couldn't get arrested."

In a letter to the hosts, Robison wrote, "I wanted to write you directly to apologize for my comment. My intention was not to insult 'The View,' and at the time I was truly just pulling a name out of the air. Today, this Chick is eating a little crow."

The Left Coast Report would be happy if instead of eating a little crow the Chicks would consume the whole bird.

3. 'Da Vinci Code' Gets 'X'-ed Out of Top Spot

With Hollywood hopes for a better summer than last year, Twentieth Century Fox's "X-Men: The Last Stand" shattered box-office records over the Memorial Day weekend.

The estimated four-day total exceeded the $120 million mark, making it the biggest holiday weekend opening ever.

Although "The Da Vinci Code's" best-opening-of-the-year record lasted only a week, it still managed to take in a respectable $42 million during the same time period.

"X-Men: The Last Stand" was produced by veteran filmmaker and committed Bible-believing Christian Ralph Winter.

Interestingly, Winter's first ambition was not to make movies. He recently told the "700 Club," "I was going to be a history major, maybe become a pastor."

The Left Coast Report points out that "Pastor" Winter has quite a pulpit and hopes his latest "sermon" brings "The Da Vinci Code" to its knees.

4. Hollywood Trade Group Accused of Hiring Hacker

According to a recently filed lawsuit, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the organization that rates movies and seeks to catch those who steal copyrights on the Web, hired a hacker to steal data from an Internet search engine company.

A federal lawsuit claims that an unidentified man was paid $15,000 to steal e-mail correspondence and trade secrets from Valence Media, the parent company of Torrentspy.com.

An MPAA executive is quoted in the lawsuit as saying, "We don't care how you get it," referring to the alleged assignment to dig up information on Torrentspy.

The hacker allegedly acquired income and expenses, private e-mails between the search engine's employees, server data and billing information.

But then the individual apparently had second thoughts. He contacted Torrentspy and is now alleged to be cooperating with the company.

Three months prior to the filing of the Torrentspy suit, the MPAA filed suit against Torrentspy and other similar companies for allegedly making it easier for pirates to distribute movies over the Internet.

The Left Coast Report wouldn't be surprised if a movie on the dueling lawsuits is in the works for pirates to eventually download.

5. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's West African Takeover

The war in Iraq, border security, runaway congressional spending? Fuhgetaboutit.

Time to make room for the Brangelina baby.

After Angelina Jolie gave birth by caesarian section in a Republic of Namibia hospital, there was a proposal to make the day a Namibian national holiday.

Apparently, a mere day of observance wasn't enough for the media who proceeded to elevate the arrival of Brad Pitt and Angelina's infant to a sacred event.

In keeping with a venerable theme, the proud parents gave their new baby girl a messianic name, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt.

Lyrical Neil Diamond musings aside, there are biblical implications to the name Shiloh. The word means "Messiah" or literally "the peaceful one."

But Brad and Angelina don't exactly take a pacifist-style approach when it comes to negotiating. Evidently, they prefer an intimidating one; at least they did when it came to the government of their baby's would-be birthplace.

Known mainly for its poverty, Namibia is now known for relinquishing control of its borders and airspace to the celebrity couple.

Jolie became acquainted with Namibia when she starred in the film "Beyond Borders," but she and Brad have created a real-life script that could be called "Tinseltown Takeover."

Namibia is a wretchedly destitute place with an average income of about $2,400 per year. Any boost to its tourism biz would no doubt be welcome.  But we're talking about the couple with the highest celebrity profile in the world gracing the country with their presence, so it's a pretty safe bet that Namibia's tourism industry will experience a boon.

From a sealed-off luxury beach villa where they spent a couple of months, Brad and Angelina told the Republic of Namibia they wanted some control over the country or they would find another that was better to their liking. Pitt and Jolie basically threatened to move their baby's debut to another locale.

The pressure exerted by the Hollywood duo was too much for Namibian authorities who admitted to Reuters that they had capitulated to the demands of the actors and given them the right to ban foreign journalists from entering the country.

Three weeks prior, a South African and three French photographers were thrown out of the country, a move decried by human rights groups who saw it as a violation of civil liberties.

"This lady is expecting," Prime Minister Nahas Angula told Reuters at the time. "You guys are harassing her. Why don't you allow her some privacy? Harassment is not allowed in Namibia."

When the government of a sovereign state yields to the demands of Hollywood stars, celebrity power takes on a whole new meaning.

International diplomacy may never be the same again.

The Left Coast Report says maybe Brad and Angelina could pay a little visit to Iran.
