THE LEFT COAST REPORT
A Political Look at Hollywood

1. 'American Idol' Fans Demand Recount

Al Gore must be proud.

Fans of the TV phenom, "American Idol," recently took a page from former presidential candidate and global warming fearmonger Al Gore and called for a recount of an "Idol" vote.

After Ryan Seacrest abruptly announced the results that sent rocker Chris Daughtry packing, his fans launched an Internet crusade to try to force a recount of the electronic chads.

Several online petitions are seeking signatures. One of them has well over 50,000 signers and climbing as of this writing.

At the Petition Site, the title of the petition reads "Return Chris Daughtry to the American Idol Competition."

The site alleges that the "phone lines were messed up most of the night for many people."

It also claims that "the overall voting situation is unfair'" and states that petitioners "believe the voting totals were wrong and demand that Chris Daughtry be brought back to the show."

The petition warns that thousands of fans will quit watching the show and many will stop tuning into FOX altogether if the network ignores petitioners' demands.

A FOX spokesperson told MSNBC, "The producers and network have gone to great lengths to ensure the integrity of the voting process on 'American Idol.' AT&T and the independent voting company that oversee the voting have confirmed that there were no issues with the phone lines after Tuesday's show. While acknowledging that dedicated fans may be unhappy with the outcome, the system only reports the decision of the voting public. As we have said before, you can't take votes for granted on this show. We encourage fans to support their favorites and vote for the person they want to see as the next American Idol."

The Left Coast Report says it could be worse - they could've used Butterfly Ballots.

2. Patrick Kennedy Wore Black-Face, Imitated Michael Jackson

Long before he was ramming his car into barricades and taking up residence at the Mayo Clinic, Congressman Patrick Kennedy was doing his best to impersonate Michael Jackson. So reports the National Enquirer.

Pictures of the then-22-year-old Rhode Island legislator have surfaced, which show him in a Jacko costume at a party held at the Virginia home of his father, Massachusetts Senator-for-Life Teddy Kennedy.

The image of a Democrat in an outfit complete with black-face, Jheri Curls and a white glove is enough to spur his political advisors to seek out his dad's wet bar.

The young Kennedy was apparently so proud of his ability to imitate Jackson that he wanted to show it off outside the confines of his father's house.

"The party wasn't crazy enough for Patrick - and he went to Georgetown in Washington to carry on drinking," a source told the National Enquirer.

3. Alec Baldwin Has GOP Girlfriend

Actor and die-hard liberal activist Alec Baldwin has been seen lately with that telltale romantic look in his eye when he's with Chinese/German girlfriend Nicole Seidel.

As reported by the New York Post, Baldwin met Seidel over four years ago while he was discussing biz with an associate using his playground voice.

Seidel, an attorney was working on a document at another table.

"She wondered why he was so loud, and she was getting annoyed," a source said. "He came over and said, 'Am I bothering you?' And she said 'Yes!'"

Apparently Baldwin liked her in-your-face candor and asked her for her phone number.

But get this. Siedel doesn't like publicity. Baldwin craves it. Siedel lives downtown. Baldwin lives uptown. Siedel eats meat. Baldwin doesn't. She isn't into animal rights and is crazy about Rudy Giuliani. He ... well, you already know.

"They don't speak about politics," a friend revealed.

The Left Coast Report guesses sometimes opposites do attract.

4. Bruce Willis Announces Media Boycott

Bruce Willis has been outspoken about his opinion that the news coverage of the Iraq war has been biased and selective.

Now Willis, who plays a raccoon in the upcoming animated feature "Over the Hedge," has decided he's had enough of the news media.

Willis told the World Entertainment News Network that the press deliberately ignores serious news in favor of racy stories.

Evidently the actor is disgusted with the frivolous and superficial nature of current news reports, so he has banned the news from his home.

"We go for the sensational now in the news. If it's not sensational or tantalizing or making fun of someone, it seldom gets into the news," Willis said. "I don't watch the news anyway. I have it turned off, and I feel so much better for it. That's why I have that youthful glow about me. I don't look worried."

The Left Coast Report notes that when you boycott the mainstream media you get a youthful glow and a bonus - the truth.

5. Love, Baby and Sometimes Marriage in Hollywood Order

First comes love, then comes ...

I know you're thinking "marriage." But when it comes to Hollywood, the next word in the old rhyme is quickly becoming B-A-B-Y.

One of the hottest Tinseltown trends these days involves reversing the longstanding tradition that marriage precedes the arrival of the stork.

Big-name celebrity couples who have decided to have children prior to wedlock were recently cited by relationship expert Dr. Ian Kerner in Star Magazine.

"Hollywood tends to buck convention," Kerner informs.

Kerner brings up financial hassles like pre-nups and custody battles to explain celebrities' unorthodox approaches and attendant difficulties. "Without the rings, they have to work that much harder to send that message of stability and love to their kids," Kerner explains.

Here are some notable examples of celebrities who are sending our impressionable youth a revised message regarding bundle-of-joy timing:

  • Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Tom flipped over Katie on Oprah's couch. About three months later Katie was with child. The two have since been blessed with a little girl, Suri, but have yet to set a wedding date.

Cruise does vow, though, that he "won't let this woman get away."

  • Madonna, Carlos Leon and Guy Ritchie

Mega-pop-star and children's book author Madonna never did marry personal trainer Leon, the father of her now 9-year-old daughter, Lourdes. She did, however, marry current husband Ritchie, but not until four months after Rocco, their son, was born.

In a nod to her priorities, Madonna explains, "The whole point of being in a relationship and having children is that you learn to love unconditionally."

  • Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams

Ledger allegedly fell for his co-star Williams during the filming of "Brokeback Mountain." The Cupid occurrence may or may not have been related to Heath's inability to "quit" Jake Gyllenhaal's on-screen alter ego.

Heath and Michelle are now mom and dad to 6-month-old Matilda.

The Oscar nominated pair is engaged but haven't set a date yet. They plan on having more kids.

"I don't feel I need a piece of paper to validate the love I have for [Michelle]," says Heath.

If Matilda could speak, her sentiments might be a bit different.

We did find two Hollywood examples of putting baby's societal concerns first and making the appropriate adjustments:

  • Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso

"Bourne Supremacy" star Matt Damon got engaged to Luciana Barroso, his girlfriend of two years, in May 2005.

They reportedly rushed the wedding, opting for a ceremony at NYC's City Hall after finding out that Luciano was four months pregnant.

The couple's baby is due in June.

  • Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

After Affleck recovered from his overly publicized romance with Jennifer Lopez, the actor found himself involved with a new Jennifer, one who could apparently also serve as his bodyguard.

After dating "Alias" star Jennifer Garner for nearly a year, Affleck and Garner were married on a Caribbean beach. Garner was four months pregnant at the time.

They've since been graced with a little girl named Violet, who is now about 5 months old.

The Left Coast Report suspects that if she could speak, Violet might say she's pleased about her legitimacy but would prefer her mom's last name to the ducky one.
