GOP Will Retain Congressional Majority in '06
Philip V. Brennan
Wednesday, March 29, 2006

The Democrats and a lot of the self-anointed media savants are predicting a Democrat sweep in the November congressional elections. Let 'em whoop and holler, but unless the GOP has completely lost its smarts, it is not going to happen.

I repeat, the Democrats will capture control of neither the House nor the Senate. To take the House, the Democrats need to win 15 more seats than the GOP. In the Senate they need six more seats. Those are hard numbers.

The smarties admit that the odds are against a Democrat recapture of the Congress on the grounds that incumbents are hard if not impossible to beat, and while there is a lot of truth to that theory, it is not the reason why the Democrats will remain in the minority on Capitol Hill.

The reason why their hopes are doomed lies in the fact that they are what they are, and what they are is not what the majority of voters, unless they've all simultaneously taken leave of their senses, want running the legislative branch of the federal government. They would much prefer that it remain a legislative branch, not a booby hatch run by the inmates.

Yeah, I know, the president's popularity ratings are low, polls allegedly show that the voters think the Democrats will do a better job of running the Congress, and the GOP is beset by scandals and is also split down the middle on red hot issues such as immigration reform. But come the first Tuesday of November, none of that will matter and the Republicans will still be the kings of the Hill when the dust settles.

Story Continues Below

Why? Simply because despite being the stupid party, the Republicans are the lucky party. The very lucky party.

They are lucking out all over the place. How lucky can you be to have the crazies in full charge of the opposition party? How lucky can you be to have Sen. Russ Feingold trying to censure the president for doing what the overwhelming majority of the American people want him to do, which is to snoop on our enemies? How lucky can they be to have the more than slightly deranged Al Gore accusing the president of committing a crime by doing what the Constitution of the United States clearly shows he has the legitimate power – and obligation – to do: safeguard the American people in the time of war?

When the hottest and most politically sensitive issue around is the matter of illegal immigration how lucky can the GOP be to have it explode now, eight months before the election, leaving lots of time for the matter to simmer down and the border to be shut down to the illegals?

And with the majority of the Republicans in the House demanding a long-overdue crackdown on illegal immigration and the crybabies on the left moaning and groaning about the plight of the illegals, how lucky can you be to have hordes of lawbreakers who scoff at our immigration laws parading in the streets carrying Mexican flags and thereby infuriating the voters?

When the Senate Judiciary Committee holds hearings on the confirmation of the president's nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court, how lucky can you be to have the likes of the bloated Teddy Kennedy and the blabbermouthed Senators Schumer and Biden harassing towering legal giants such as now-Justices Alito and Roberts and moreover doing it on TV for all the nation to see?

Add to all of this, the fact that George W. Bush is president of the United States and has all sorts of opportunities at his disposal to alter the political landscape, and you have anything but a dismal picture as we move toward November.

If Republicans seeking re-election to Congress, or those running against Democrats, especially in the red states, have any political smarts they will eschew running on the defensive and go on the attack. They need only to ask the voters if they really want the government to be run by the likes of the absurd Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Russ Feingold, Teddy Kennedy and the rest of the motley Marxists who run their party. The voters must be made aware that this is what they'll get by voting for Democrat congressional candidates.

The voters need to be reminded that by voting for a Democrat they will be voting to make Rep. John Conyers Jr. chairman of the House Judiciary Committee – the same John Conyers Jr. who says he wants to impeach the president of the United States in the middle of a war and as chairman would have the power to initiate impeachment proceedings, putting a wartime president on trial.

They need to be reminded that by voting for a Democrat congressional candidate they will be voting to raise their taxes and call a halt to the most phenomenal economic boom this nation has seen in decades – a boom created largely by the Bush tax cuts.

They need to be reminded that by voting for a Democrat they will be voting for a party that has no idea of how to fight the war in Iraq and is dominated by far-out leftists who want to cut and run and leave the Middle East in shambles.

The American voters are not that stupid. That's why the Republicans are the lucky party, and why the lucky party will continue to reign over Capital Hill. Deo gratias.
