Why the Hamas Election Victory ‘Stunned' the West
Lev Navrozov
Friday, Feb. 10, 2006

The Western notion of world freedom and democracy is based on the Western assumption that only individuals and small groups may be evil, aggressive and criminal, while mankind at large, and hence a majority in any country, is Homo sapiens. According to my Latin-English dictionary, "sapiens" means wise, sensible, judicious, discreet. The term Homo sapiens was coined by an 18th-century middle-class Westerner named Carl von Linné (Linnaeus). In the West today, Homo sapiens lives (to ameliorate his or her lot (for example, financially) and lets live (so that everyone could ameliorate his or her lot and have the human rights to do so).

Unfortunately, many countries are still ruled by dictators, who prevent majorities (Homo sapiens) from electing Homo sapiens as legislatures and governments. The world goal is to liberate majorities (Homo sapiens) in every country, as a result of which world freedom and democracy will ensue, for Homo sapiens as majorities will elect Homo sapiens as legislatures and governments.

True, on Jan. 28, the Discovery channel showed for several evening hours a program glorifying today's Chinese construction engineering as second to none in the world, without mentioning or alluding to dictatorship in China and without even hinting at its being dangerous to the West. On the other hand, oil-rich Iraq was invaded pre-emptively as being dangerous, has been battled for three years, and it is believed that its future Shia government will be a U.S. ally even after the U.S. troops leave the country.

So there isn't much consistency in the liberation of Homo sapiens from dictators to establish world freedom and democracy and enable Homo sapiens majorities to elect Homo sapiens legislatures and governments.

Nevertheless, the political establishment of the West had been assuming that on January 25, 2006, a "majority of the Palestinian people" would elect a democratic Palestinian government and legislature that would establish good neighborly relations with Israel. As for the Hamas terrorists, they would be duly put on trial and convicted as criminals, should they try to continue their terror against Israel.

In anticipation of that triumph of world freedom and democracy in Palestine, Ariel Sharon, prime minister of Israel, gave away, with the blessing of the U.S. government and the European Union, Gaza and northern West Bank as a gift to the forthcoming democratic Palestine to evoke good neighborly feelings of the majority of the Palestinian people, about to elect their democratic government and legislature.

Actually, Sharon's pullout from Gaza and northern West Bank had contributed to the Hamas landslide victory: In the perception of many Palestinian voters, Israel fled from Gaza and northern West Bank, and hence Israel will flee from all of its territories, which Palestine will take over.

Why cannot a Palestinian majority have such a horrible view? After Hitler gobbled up France in 1940 and until he was defeated at Moscow in December 1941, a "majority of the German people" would have voted for him in an impeccably fair and just democratic election. Indeed, Hitler had become Reichschancellor (the first step to his dictatorship) due to an impeccably fair and just Reichstag election in the Weimar Republic.

Now, if France could be seized by Germany in 1940 and 6 million Jews be "eliminated" in 1942-45, why cannot Israel be seized and "eliminated" by Palestine?

At a press conference on Jan. 28, Khaled Meshal, the "political head of Hamas," declared that what is called Israel is an illegitimate occupation of Palestine land. The Hamas key tune is: "The entire land of Palestine belongs to Allah and is Muslim holy land." Said Mahmud Zahar, one of the two most prominent leaders in Gaza, a gift from Sharon:

We do not recognize the Israeli enemy, nor his right to be our neighbor or to stay, nor his ownership of a single inch [!] of land.
Many members of the Western political establishment declared, following the Hamas election victory on Jan. 25, that NOW Hamas would discontinue terrorism. Thus, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared: "We reaffirmed the view [after the Hamas election victory] that you cannot have one foot in terror and the other in politics."

These Westerners are absolutely correct. In the democratic Hamas government, the terrorists won't be just random assassins but its secret agents, targeting strategically important Israelis and Israeli weapons research, development and production, spying – in short, waging a "secret war from within." In its arms race and military power race, the democratic Hamas government will be linked to all fundamentalist Islamic countries (such as the future Shia Iraq!) as their spearhead aimed at "the Israeli enemy." It will be all "politics," not "terror"!
